Communities through art

Creative, participatory solutions for social and urban renewal

Communities through art is a cross-border project implemented by Anthropolis (HU) and Citizenit (RO), aiming to strengthen mutual trust between communities in Romania and Hungary through artistic interventions, cultural events, and direct people-to-people actions.

The project addresses key territorial challenges such as the limited interaction between individuals, artists, and cultural organisations on both sides of the border. It proposes creative, participatory solutions for social and urban regeneration, including mural painting workshops, student courses, VR events, documentary film screenings with public discussions, festivals, and concerts. Activities take place in several cities across the ROHU eligible area, actively involving artists, youth, students, and the general public in co-creative processes with long-term impact. The project is funded by the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme, with a total budget of €199,985.94, out of which 80% is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund. Dávid Mikulán’s latest short film, produced with the help of students and film club leaders, showcases the diversity of Debrecen’s communities. The filmmakers approached people on the street, asking them what community means to them.

The participants offered personal, sometimes surprising, and thought-provoking answers that sensitively capture the various facets of belonging to a community.

"Originally, the title was going to be Tré, but then we decided on KIX," said director Dávid Mikulán at the fall screening of KIX at Grand Café Szeged, where we showed the film to a full house. Don't miss out on the most original and internationally successful Hungarian documentary of recent years, especially since Dávid is coming back to talk about the film.

Looking back two weeks ago at the KF Arad art talk—a discussion on mural art, urban interventions, and color, featuring artists and curators. Thanks to everyone! It was great!

At the end of October, it was the students of Szeged's turn to get up and immerse themselves in the street art on the other side of the border. As part of our program, they not only gained insight into the street murals of Arad thanks to citizenit's thorough tour guide, but also participated in the unveiling of a joint graffiti piece by Romanian Recis and Hungarian Fat Heat.
Viszonylag ritkán látunk bele egy alkotás mögött meghúzódó hosszabb folyamatba, de a Grand Café Szegedben most erre is lehetőségünk nyílik. Projektünk keretében kapott új, mára már ikonikus freskót Szeged kedvelt underground kávézója Kiss Adél értő kezei közül. Ma izgalmas kiállítás nyílik, amelyben vázlatokon, jegyzeteken, gondolatokon keresztül megérthetjük, hogyan jutott arra a végeredményre a képzőművész, amely a falon látható.
Check it out until 30 November!

It is relatively rare to get a glimpse into the lengthy process behind a work of art, but Grand Café Szeged now offers us this opportunity. As part of our project, Szeged's popular underground café received a new, now iconic fresco from the hands of Adél Kiss. Today, an exciting exhibition opens, in which we can understand, through sketches, notes, and thoughts, how the artist arrived at the final result that can be seen on the wall. – 2025. szeptember 18-20. | Grand Café (Szeged, Deák Ferenc u. 18.)

The reopening of Grand Café Szeged will be celebrated with a multidisciplinary arts festival (September 18-20, 2025) Grand Café. Refreshed from its annual summer break, Grand Café in Szeged returns this year with a new mural, which will be celebrated with a three-day, free multi-arts festival at the iconic cultural venue in the southern part of Hungary.

A report broadcast on Szeged Televízió about the opening day of our multi-day event held at Grand Café Szeged

Students from Szeged and Timișoara are collaborating with art historian Mihai Moldovan and filmmakers Alin Boeru and Dávid Mikulán to document layers of street art in Szeged through photographs and on-site video reports. The completed works will be exhibited during the Le Grand Opening event series. The photographs will be shown in traditional print format, while the video footage will be displayed continuously on screens, illustrating how street attendees perceive the murals.

During the Le Grand Opening festival preparations, students from Szeged and Timișoara formed into three groups. During the workshops, led by experts and artists, students could familiarise themselves with the main street art spots of Szeged, get a taste of on-the-spot report making and photography, and immerse themselves in the planning of communication strategies for cultural events and content creation. The results of the workshops will be displayed as an exhibition in Grand Café Szeged.

We are proud that Interreg Hungary is celebrating the Interreg Cooperation Day, which is held around September 21st each year, with our project this year. To be precise, Interreg Romania - Hungary chose our opening event on Thursday to celebrate this year's 35th anniversary. See you in Szeged on September 18th!

Do you know where this graffiti is located in Szeged? If not, don't worry, thanks to the students of University of Szeged, a comprehensive graffiti map of the city will be ready by September, contributing to the research work to give the mural being created at Grand Café Szeged as much local flavour as possible.

We asked the participants of our course organized for students of University of Szegedto tell us in one picture what they have gained from our joint work so far. The multimedia adventure is not over yet, as we will return to Grand Cafe in September to round off what we have learned in a multi-day workshop.

As part of our project, a new mural will be painted on the wall of @grandcafeszeged. During the workshop in May, students of University of Szeged used a variety of media to gather inspiration for the commissioned street artist, so that the legendary wall in Szeged could be decorated with a work of art that fits in with the environment, tradition, and function. This video recalls some memorable moments from the rich history of the established institution.

We bring you the future of documentary film screenings! With the help of 10 VR headsets purchased under the programme, following the successful workshop in Debrecen in April, you will soon be able to watch VR documentaries in Szeged and Timisoara, providing a much more personal experience than usual. Details coming soon!

We’ve introduced our brand-new VR devices—now it’s time to unveil the first film in our screening series. Plastisapiens is a soothing yet striking journey into a future where humans and plastic merge as one.
This 15-minute interactive VR experience runs on Quest 2 headsets and can be navigated with controllers or simple hand gestures. Featuring soft animation and a meditative tone laced with irony, the film takes viewers into a speculative eco-fictional world where plastics and organic life blend into hybrid beings. It’s a thought-provoking yet playful exploration of identity and transformation.

We’ve recently started introducing the VR films that will soon be available as part of our immersive experience series. The second title, Fresh Memories: The Look, tells the reality of war through the silent power of human gaze. This 10-minute film takes us to the ruins of Kharkiv—through destroyed homes, playgrounds, and hospital rooms, where local residents look us straight in the eye. Their gaze expresses loss, pain, and perhaps even hope. A haunting yet dignified experience that lingers long after it’s over.

The third film available as part of our upcoming VR screenings is 21–22 China—a breathtaking, wordless journey into the Anthropocene, where human presence reshapes the land as seen from China’s skies. This 24-minute 360° VR film features only real aerial footage, capturing vast shifts in landscape caused by rapid urbanization and industrial growth. With no CGI and no narration, director Thierry Loa invites viewers into a contemplative exploration of the planet’s changing face. Meditative, monumental, and deeply thought-provoking, it offers a quiet yet powerful reflection on human expansion.
